All about Wyverns

As a Dragoon you get your very own pet from Lvl 1. A baby dragon called a Wyvern. When you first get your Wyvern you have to give it a name. Unfortunetly, unlike your personal character, you cannot just make up whatever name you want for your Wyvern. Instead there is a preset list of names that you have to choose from. After choosing a name, you need to decide what kind of Wyvern you want, there are three kinds which are Offensive, Defensive, and Balanced.

Naming your Wyvern
When you first get your wyvern you have to name it. You get a preset list of names to choose from. Later if you go to Norg and pay Fouvia 9800 Gil, she will allow you to rename your Wyvern from the original list as well as an additional 3 lists. The name lists are as follows:

Wyvern Types
Something that you need to decide on is how you want your Wyvern to support you, this is all decided based on the Support Job that you choose and there are 3 types.
1. Offensive Wyvern

Regardless of your Support Job choice, your Wyvern will physically attack whatever you attack. What makes it offensive is the fact that when you use any kind of Weapon Skill, the Wyvern will follow up with an Elemental Breath. The element is random, completely random too. For example, I have personally seen my Wyvern use Lightning Breath on one Snipper doing massive damage, and Hydro Breath on another Snipper doing a whopping 2 HP of damage. One good thing if there is a mage in your party is that the Elemental Breath can be used as the opener of a Magic Burst. Half of the possible subjobs will give you an Offensive Wyvern.

2. Defensive Wyvern

Instead of Elemental Breath when you use a Weapon Skill, your Wyvern will use Remove Breath which will remove negative status effects from party members. Also, if you use a spell, your Wyvern will use Healing Breath to restore HP to party members whose health is below 1/3. The Drachen Armlet will allow Healing Breath at 1/2 health and the Wyrm Armlet will increase the amount recovered at 1/3 health. To have a Defensive Wyvern you need your subjob to be White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Blue Mage, Scholar, or Summoner. If you choose summoner you will only get Remove Breath.

3. Balanced Wyvern

Also known as a Multi-purpose Wyvern, your Wyvern will use Elemental Breath if you use a Weapon Skill and Healing Breath if you use a spell. Healing Breath will only heal those who are at 1/4 health. The Drachen Armlet will allow Healing Breath at 1/4. To have a Balanced Wyvern you need your subjob to be Bard, Dark Knight, Paladin, or Ninja.

Subtle Blow - Decreases amount of TP Monsters earn when attacked by your Wyvern
Elemental Breath - Deals elemental damage
Healing Breath - Restore Health to itself, you, or any party members
Remove Breath - Removes negative status effect from self, you, or party members
Attack Bonus - Increase physical damage dealt
Dragon Killer - Increase damage dealt to Dragons
Accuracy Bonus - Increase chance of hitting monsters
Super Climb - The Wyvern will be immune to attacks and abilities during the duration of the Dragoon's Super Jump.
